Anticipation, nerves and excitement backstage at dress rehearsal for the Nutcracker.

I attended and photographed a Nutcracker rehearsal at Baltimore School for the Arts.  It happened at the spur of the moment and so I didn’t have the best possible lenses, but I went with what I had. I realized quite quickly I wouldn’t really be able to capture the lifts and the big jumps with what I had, so I went for the in between moments, the expressions, the looks in the mirror, the innate joy and excitement the dancers exuded as they prepared for the big day only four days away.  More to come: dress rehearsal on stage, backstage, and performance.

Pocket Square
Though his suit is mismatched and worn in, I was taken with this gentleman’s pocket square.  There is so much style on the streets of Harlem.

Just came across this one while looking through my archives.  My best portraits really are of my kids.  There’s really nothing like that connection of knowing and understanding and loving each other that brings out the true essence of one’s subject.

I’ve been spending a lot of time in Baltimore and as I don’t have a car, I’ve been riding the bus. New Yorkers ride public transportation all the time, but here it is quite different. The poor and disenfranchised ride public with an occasional college student or disabled person thrown in. Buses full of people who can’t afford cars travel through very wealthy neighborhoods and desolate, dark dangerous ones too. My kids don’t like when I photograph random people on the bus or subway, but I mean no harm. I am just fascinated by the faces I see everyday and excited to photograph them as I experience this new city.

Discovering LightIt is the morning after the first night in a new apartment. I didn’t sleep very well and on top of that it is Daylight Savings time! I’m supposed to be enjoying my extra hour of sleep. The great thing about living in a new place is discovering the daily patterns of light.
