Just came across this one while looking through my archives. My best portraits really are of my kids. There’s really nothing like that connection of knowing and understanding and loving each other that brings out the true essence of one’s subject.
I’ve been spending a lot of time in Baltimore and as I don’t have a car, I’ve been riding the bus. New Yorkers ride public transportation all the time, but here it is quite different. The poor and disenfranchised ride public with an occasional college student or disabled person thrown in. Buses full of people who can’t afford cars travel through very wealthy neighborhoods and desolate, dark dangerous ones too. My kids don’t like when I photograph random people on the bus or subway, but I mean no harm. I am just fascinated by the faces I see everyday and excited to photograph them as I experience this new city.
Discovering Light It is the morning after the first night in a new apartment. I didn’t sleep very well and on top of that it is Daylight Savings time! I’m supposed to be enjoying my extra hour of sleep. The great thing about living in a new place is discovering the daily patterns of light.
